All part of the game… sadly.

Despite the highest of hopes and tons of anticipation, not very much of the trip went well.  We had relatively smooth travel even though some snow and winter conditions slowed us down a bit through the Ely section of the journey.  The feces and the fan didn’t get acquainted until we arrived at the track.  There was almost solid rain the whole weekend and not just a little bit either.  If that wasn’t enough to kill the vibe then the fact that almost all of the heavy hitters didn’t even bother to come out due to the said precipitation just added water to the wet blanket.

When Sunday morning dawned we left our hotel and headed to the track to have our session.  We were the first ones there and got out on the circuit right away.  After four to six laps or so the car started misfiring.  A silly little problem had flared up again although it was minor it did stop our show until 4pm when the day was nearly done.  The rest or the group showed up around 12pm and started to play on the track.  Ryan Fadera of Team R.A.D. let me take his comp car out since my ride was “drinkin’ outta cups.”  His S13 drove very well and I felt comfortable after the 1st lap.  HTM is a different animal in the rain and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with all the different lines that were possible.  Rob Riter was unable to make it out to the track due to some unfortunate events on his end so at least my mechanical issues were not the reason my co-driver missed his seat time.

In the end I did get a good number of laps in with all things considered.  It was very warm in the southern country even with the rain, and I still have a bunch of new tires ready to kill!

I am going through the pictures and will drop some here soon.

Competition:

Since drifting is still in its infant stages here in Idaho, there are not many drivers with roll bars or cages with door bars. Because of this we can not have an all out tandem competition. This competition will be structured the same as many amateur competitions around the country. It will be judged by individual runs. So, after the practice session, each driver will run 2 heats. Each heat will consist of 2 back to back “laps”. After everyone runs 2 heats, we will go through our notes and our “scores” to narrow the field down to the top 16 drivers. The top 16 drivers will repeat this same process and then we will take it down to the top 8. From the top 8 down to 4 and then we will choose the winners. The top 3 will win prizes. Depending on time we will try to keep the same 2 heat structure through the whole bracket.

Judging and Judges:

David Titus along with Dan Hillsberry will be judging. We are working on getting one guest judge out of state, with a good amount of experience under their belt.

Reinventing the wheel.

Yup, this is one of those things that we can all benefit from when it comes to Drift, or any other motorsport scene (well maybe not winter rallying). Most of you have cars that are setup similar to mine and  are running a pretty decent amount of camber all the way around, which is pretty great for the twisties but a big downside is the uneven wear on the tire. All of the tires which are available on the market are made as a rectangle tire with no angle to them but a man from Wisconsin might have came up with a solution. He came up with a camber tire and finally submitted a patent for the tires. Well the patent was submitted as far back as ’99 and the tires have still not barely made it into production through a small company called Optima Sports.  To get more specific info on the patent you can head over to http://www.cambertire.com/ but the website is still under construction…

The tires give many improvements over the conventional tires event for regular street driving. The maker claims that “Camber Tire can deliver substantially improved handling, ride quality, tread wear and fuel economy.”

“demonstrated shorter stopping distances, higher cornering speeds and a markedly improved ride. The tires’ breakaway at the ragged edge of adhesion was more progressive and predictable than the Mitsubishi’s original-equipment Yokohama radials.”

Here’s a detailed look at the results of Automobile‘s tests:

If he succeeds in bringing this straight-from-the-track tire technology to the masses then maybe he really has “reinvented the wheel.”
